Styles that cut well

Every example below is a real style in the tool. Tap one to open it, then change the word.

How it works

  1. 1Type your words

A name, a shop, a phrase for a shirt or a tumbler. Up to 24 characters.

  2. 2Pick a style

Layered outlines and solid colors cut best. Open the style to change the colors and the outline thickness.

  3. 3Export a cut file

Tap Customize more to open the style in the editor, export the SVG and choose “Cut file”. Upload it to your cutting machine’s design app. No account.

Cut files built from your letters

Text that looks great on screen often cuts badly: outlines are only lines, letters overlap, and every color is mixed in one piece. A cut file needs solid shapes, welded letters and the colors on separate layers. Here that is done for you when you export — pick a style, type your words, tap Customize more to open it in the editor, export the SVG as “Cut file”, and upload it.

What the cut file does

On screenIn the cut file
Outlines drawn as linesTurned into solid shapes the blade can follow
Letters touching or overlappingWelded into one piece, so they don’t cut apart
Several colorsSplit into layers, for layered vinyl and iron-on
GradientsOne flat color
Glitter, gloss, shadowsLeft out — they can’t be cut

Tips for text that cuts cleanly

  • Choose thick fonts for small decals; thin strokes tear when weeding.
  • Keep outlines at least a few millimeters wide at the size you will cut.
  • Check the size before cutting. Set the final width in your cutting app.
  • Layer from the biggest shape up. The outermost outline goes down first.

FAQ

Text logos
QWhat is different about the cut file?
A normal SVG keeps outlines as strokes and effects as they look on screen. The cut file turns every outline into a solid shape, welds overlapping letters into one piece, and separates the colors into layers — what a blade needs to follow. You make it in the editor: tap Customize more on a style, then export the SVG as “Cut file”.
QWhich effects can’t be cut?
Glitter, gloss, shadows and photos can’t be cut, so they are left out of the cut file. The letters and outlines under them are kept. Gradients become one flat color. For those looks, cut the shape from glitter, holographic or printable vinyl.
QHow do I make a layered vinyl or iron-on design?
Pick a style with two or more outlines in different colors. The colors are split into separate layers in the cut file; cut each layer from a different vinyl and stack them, largest layer first.
QDoes it work with Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio?
The cut file is a standard SVG, so you can upload it to Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio (editions that open SVG) and other cutting software. Cricut and Silhouette are trademarks of their owners; DecoTecoPop is not affiliated with them.
QCan I make it without a computer?
Yes. It runs in the browser on an iPhone or Android phone, and you can save the SVG to your phone and upload it from the cutting app. More: making cut files without a computer.
QIs it really free? Do I need to sign up?
There is no sign-up and no account. Every feature, including transparent PNG and SVG download, is free while the tool is in beta. Anything you make during the beta stays yours to use.
QCan I use what I make commercially?
The design you make is yours — we do not claim copyright on what you export (see the Terms). One thing to know: a logo built only from a standard font can be hard to register as a trademark, so if you plan to register one, ask a professional.
