Name decals that cut cleanly

A name decal is small, which makes it unforgiving: thin strokes tear, tiny gaps close, and overlapping letters cut apart. The styles here use solid outlines around the letters, and the cut file welds the letters and turns outlines into shapes so the name comes off the mat in one piece.

Tips

  • Two layers are plenty for small decals — the letters and one outline.
  • Curved cups: keep the decal shorter than the flat band of the cup. See curved text for tumblers.

QWhat size should a name decal be?
Measure the flat area you will stick it on and leave a margin. As a rough guide, names on tumblers and water bottles are often a few inches wide; locker and door names can be larger. Set the final size in your cutting software.
QWhich vinyl should I use?
Permanent adhesive vinyl for tumblers and bottles that get washed; removable vinyl for walls, lockers and anything you may take off later.
QWhy does the decal tear when I weed it?
Thin outlines and small letters tear easily. Pick a heavier style or make the decal larger.
QCan I make a whole set of names?
