That thin white line is telling you something specific
You print a sheet of stickers, the machine cuts them out, and every single one has a faint white edge on one side. Sometimes all the way round. Sometimes only on the right. It looks like a printing defect. It isn’t.
It means the cut landed just outside your artwork, and what you’re seeing is the bare sticker paper underneath.
No cutting machine is perfect. Paper stretches slightly, rollers slip a fraction, the registration marks are read to within a tolerance. The result is that the blade lands somewhere within roughly 0.5–1 mm (about 1/32 inch) of where you asked. If your colour stops exactly at the cut line, that tolerance shows up as white.
The fix is to print more colour than you cut. That extra colour is called bleed.
Bleed vs. offset: they are not the same thing
These two get mixed up constantly, and mixing them up is why people add an offset and still get white edges.

An offset is the white or coloured halo you want — the classic sticker border. Bleed is the invisible safety margin beyond that border.
The most common mistake: adding a 0.1-inch offset, cutting exactly on the outer edge of that offset, and being surprised there’s still white. The offset became the new edge, and the new edge still has no bleed.
You usually want both. A visible offset for looks, and bleed past it so the cut can’t miss.
How much bleed
For printed-and-cut stickers:
- Minimum: 0.5 mm (0.02 in) past the cut line
- Comfortable: 1 mm (0.04 in)
- Kiss-cut sheets, where the backing stays intact: 1 mm — the tolerance is the same, you just don’t notice failures as much
More than about 2 mm starts to be visible on adjacent stickers when you pack them tightly on a sheet, so there’s no prize for going bigger.
If your design already ends in a solid colour band — a filled circle, a rounded rectangle — bleeding is easy: just extend the fill. If it ends in fine detail, add a shape behind it that extends past the cut line and matches the edge colour.
The three-layer way to think about a sticker
Once you see a printed-and-cut sticker as three separate things, the settings stop being mysterious.
- The artwork — your lettering, illustration, colours.
- The offset — the visible border, usually white, that makes the sticker read as a sticker.
- The cut line — the path the blade follows, sitting inside the printed area by the bleed amount.
The white halo happens when layers 2 and 3 are the same shape. Keep them different and the halo can’t appear.
Getting it right on export
Whatever tool you design in, these are the things to check before you send anything to the printer:
- Print the bleed, don’t just leave space. Bleed is colour, not margin. Blank paper past the cut line is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.
- Export the printed artwork as a raster image (PNG) at roughly 300 pixels per inch of finished size. Print detail needs resolution.
- Export the cut line as a vector if your workflow uses a separate cut file. A cut path is a shape, not a picture.
- Keep the registration marks clear. Most printers need a quiet margin around the sheet where the machine reads its marks — don’t push stickers into it.
- Check the colour mode. Vivid neons and bright cyans shift noticeably in print; that’s ink chemistry, not a settings error.

Textured and specialty sticker sheets
Glitter, holographic, gloss and matte sheets behave slightly differently, and it’s worth knowing which differences matter.
- Glitter and holographic stock scatters light, which makes a thin white edge more visible, not less. Give these an extra 0.5 mm of bleed.
- Gloss shows registration errors clearly because the surface is uniform.
- Matte is the most forgiving, and the easiest place to start if you’re dialling in a new machine.
None of these change the fundamentals — they change how obvious a mistake looks.
Cutting slightly inside on purpose
There’s one more trick worth knowing: instead of cutting exactly on the artwork edge, deliberately cut 0.5 mm inside it. You lose half a millimetre of design and gain a guarantee that no bare paper can ever appear.
For designs with a white offset border, nobody will ever notice — the border simply ends up very slightly narrower on one side. For designs cut tight to fine artwork, it’s the difference between a professional sheet and a scrappy one.
This is the same idea as bleed, applied from the other direction. Use both and the tolerance problem disappears entirely.
How registration actually works (and what breaks it)
Print-then-cut relies on the machine finding your printed sheet before it cuts. It does that by looking for marks the software adds — usually black rectangles or corner brackets around the printed area. A sensor scans for them, works out exactly where the sheet is sitting, and offsets the cut accordingly.
Everything that goes wrong with registration comes from the sensor failing to read those marks properly.
Things that break it:
- Coloured or patterned paper. The sensor is looking for black on white. Cream, kraft and coloured stock can defeat it.
- Glossy stock under bright light. Glare washes out the marks. Reducing overhead light genuinely helps.
- Faded or streaky printing. Low ink turns a solid black mark into a grey one. Print the marks at full black.
- Design elements too close to the marks. Most machines want a clear quiet zone; artwork intruding into it confuses the scan.
- A dirty or worn mat. If the sheet shifts mid-scan, everything after is offset.
- The sheet loaded crooked. Small angles are corrected; large ones aren’t.
If registration fails repeatedly: print the same sheet on plain white matte paper as a test. If that scans and the glossy one doesn’t, it’s the stock, not the file.
Kiss cut, die cut, through cut
These three words describe how deep the blade goes, and they change what you should do about bleed.

Kiss cut is the most forgiving: a slightly off cut leaves a faint line in the backing that nobody sees. It’s the right default for sheets.
Die cut is the least forgiving, because the cut edge is the product edge. Every millimetre of inaccuracy is visible on all four sides. Give die cuts the most bleed.
A practical middle path many shops use: kiss cut the stickers, then through-cut the sheet edge. The stickers peel individually and the sheet has a clean border.
Calibrating the offset (the fix nobody mentions)
If your white edge is always on the same side by roughly the same amount, that’s not random tolerance — it’s a systematic offset, and most machines let you correct it.
The procedure is the same across machines even though the menus differ:
- Print a calibration sheet — either the one the software provides, or a simple filled rectangle with a known size.
- Cut it and look at where the blade landed relative to the printed edge.
- Measure the error in millimetres, and note the direction.
- Enter the correction in the machine’s calibration setting.
- Repeat once to confirm.
Ten minutes, once, and it removes the systematic half of the problem permanently. Bleed then only has to absorb the random half — which is why 0.5–1 mm is enough on a calibrated machine and never seems to be enough on an uncalibrated one.
Recalibrate if you change materials substantially, move the machine, or replace the mat.

A repeatable sticker-sheet setup
Once you’ve calibrated, this sequence produces consistent sheets:
- Set the sheet size and leave the machine’s required quiet margin untouched
- Lay out the stickers with at least 1/8 in between them
- Add the visible offset border to each design (the white halo, if you want one)
- Add bleed past that border — 0.5–1 mm, in the edge colour
- Generate the cut path on the outer edge of the visible border, or 0.5 mm inside it
- Export the print artwork as PNG at 300 ppi of the sheet size
- Print, then cut — checking the first sheet before running the batch
The one step people drop is 4, because 3 and 4 look identical on screen. They aren’t: one is design, the other is insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Why is the white edge only on one side?
That’s registration drift — the whole cut is offset in one direction rather than being randomly inaccurate. Bleed fixes it either way, but if it’s consistently the same side and large, check that the sheet is loaded straight and the mat is clean.
Q. Do I need bleed for vinyl decals that aren’t printed?
No. Bleed only matters when printing and cutting are two separate operations that have to line up. A plain vinyl cut has no printed layer to misalign with.
Q. Should the bleed be the same colour as the edge of my design?
Yes — extend the edge colour outward. If the edge is a white offset border, the bleed is more white. If it’s a red circle, the bleed is more red.
Q. Does adding an offset automatically add bleed?
No, and this is the trap. An offset moves the visible edge outward; the cut line usually moves with it. You still need colour beyond wherever the cut line ends up.
Q. How do I add bleed if my design has an irregular shape?
Duplicate the outermost shape, scale it up very slightly (or apply a small outward offset), fill it with the edge colour, and put it behind everything. That’s your bleed layer.
