The color is nothing like what I saw on screen
You printed a flyer or business card made in Canva, it arrived—and the color was off. That vivid blue turned into a dull navy. The pink became some kind of salmon.
This isn’t a matter of design taste. It’s a mechanics problem: screens and print build color in fundamentally different ways. In this article we’ll walk through why colors change in Canva, which colors shift the most, and how to check your colors before submitting so you can avoid the failure.
Screens and print build color in fundamentally different ways
Phone and computer screens build color with “light.” They mix red, green, and blue light to express color—that’s RGB. The more light you add, the brighter and more vivid it gets, so screens can produce quite vivid colors.
Print builds color with ink. It uses a method called CMYK, mixing cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and ink has the property of getting darker the more you mix it.
Canva data is basically saved in RGB. When you hand it to a print shop, it gets automatically converted to CMYK to match the press. During that step, “colors RGB can produce but CMYK cannot” get swapped for the nearest available color. That’s the true identity of your shifted colors.

Colors that shift the most
Near-fluorescent oranges, pinks, and greens, plus overly vivid blues and cyans, are the classic colors that are hard to reproduce in CMYK. Conversely, muted tones, grays, and browns tend to shift relatively little.
Specifically, colors with both high saturation and high brightness—like RGB #00FFFF (vivid cyan) or #FF00FF (magenta)—sink the most. Canva’s “vivid templates” tend to contain a lot of these colors when used as-is, so they call for caution.
Why colors also change depending on the print shop = the ICC profile story
It can happen that “the data was identical, but switching print shops changed the color too.” This is because the ICC profile—the “translation rule” used when converting colors—differs from shop to shop.
A representative example is Japan Color 2001 Coated (for coated paper). Depending on which profile is used for the conversion and what kind of paper you print on, the same CMYK values can finish in different shades. Matte paper makes ink sink for a more muted color, while glossy paper looks more vivid—differences like that show up too.
The important thing here is that the conversion always happens somewhere, performed by someone. If you leave it to the print shop, you can’t check that “translation” yourself. That’s exactly why it’s reassuring to convert to CMYK yourself and check your colors before submitting.
Free Canva can’t export CMYK
Canva Pro has a feature to export in CMYK at download time. The free version doesn’t. You can only export in RGB, so all the color conversion is left entirely to the print shop.
“Will going Pro solve it?” Honestly, it’s not perfect either. Converting a design originally made in RGB to CMYK afterward inevitably produces some difference. What matters most before printing is whether you can check the converted color yourself.
How to check your colors yourself before submitting
The single best way to prevent color shifts is simple: “look at the converted colors before you print.” Here are the concrete steps.
- Export from Canva as PNG (or JPEG). Your work in Canva can stay in RGB—that’s fine.
- Convert the exported image to CMYK. If you have Photoshop, do it in the software; if not, use the browser tool described below.
- Compare the converted colors with the originals. Check the vivid areas (logo, background, accent colors) especially carefully.
- Adjust only the colors that sank too much. Go back to Canva and nudge that color a touch brighter and more vivid, and it’ll come out “just right” in print.
Adding this one step alone nearly eliminates the “disappointment when it arrives.”

Q. If I export CMYK with Canva Pro, will the color shift disappear?
Not completely. As long as you’re converting a design originally made in RGB to CMYK afterward, out-of-gamut colors will always appear. If color matters, visually checking the converted data is the sure approach.
