Three reasons a phone AI image “can’t be printed as-is”

The resolution is too low

Print needs 350 dpi or higher, but phone AI images are usually generated at 72–96 dpi. That’s a quarter to a fifth of the resolution print needs, so printing it as-is comes out blurry. The color format is RGB

Phone screens display color in a model called RGB. Print uses CMYK, the ink model. Submit in RGB and the print shop converts it automatically, during which colors can get dull or shift.

There’s no bleed

Printed material is finished by trimming, so you need “bleed” — making it 3 mm larger than the finished size — to prevent white slivers from edge drift. AI images don’t have it.

These three together lead to “this can’t be submitted as-is.”

What to do to improve print quality

Choose the largest size when saving the AI image

When you generate an image in ChatGPT or Canva, pick “high resolution” or “maximum size” when saving. There’s a limit to raising resolution after the fact, so using a large image from the start is the basics.

Decide your print size before you create

Confirming up front whether it’s an A4 flyer or a business card makes it easier to match the aspect ratio of the image you generate. Print shops have submission guides on their sites, so take a look once.


Tips for saving the “largest size” image on your phone

Phones are convenient, but they can quietly shrink images when you save. If it’s for print, the iron rule is to save it as large as possible. Here are some app-by-app tips.

  • ChatGPT app: Tap the generated image to open it and save it from the save (download) icon. A screenshot shrinks it to screen size, so be sure to use “save.”
  • Canva app: From share/download, export at the highest-quality setting (PNG / high quality). Don’t pick the shrunken export meant for social sharing.
  • Other generation apps: If there are save options like “high resolution,” “original size,” or “HD,” always choose them.

A screenshot only saves at the size “visible on screen,” so it’s not suited for print. Always export at the original size using the app’s save function.
